"I was there to take down the names of people who were arrested… As I’m standing there, some African-American woman goes up to a police officer and says, ‘I need to get in. My daughter’s there. I want to know if she’s OK.’ And he said, ‘Move on, lady.’ And they kept pushing with their sticks, pushing back. And she was crying. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he throws her to the ground and starts hitting her in the head,” says Smith. “I walk over, and I say, ‘Look, cuff her if she’s done something, but you don’t need to do that.’ And he said, ‘Lady, do you want to get arrested?’ And I said, ‘Do you see my hat? I’m here as a legal observer.’ He said, ‘You want to get arrested?’ And he pushed me up against the wall."

Hustler of the Day: Jay-Z’s Rocawear clothing label just released its Occupy Wall Street solidarity shirt, inviting you “to show your support for the Occupy Wall Street Movement…with a dope tee.”
And while you’re showing your support for Occupy Wall Street with Hova’s (potentially plagiarized) ode to anti-greed, the brand will be showing its support for Regular Wall Street by making bank.
When asked by Business Insider if any of the proceeds will be going to benefit OWS, a Rocawear rep responded: ”At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”
Problem?

Shocker! The 1% has found a way to profit from the public’s outrage at the 1%.

I made millions studying the math of mortgages and bonds and helping bankers pass the Chartered Financial Analyst Exam.
It isn’t fair that I have retired in comfort after a career working with financial instruments while people who worked as nurses, teachers, soldiers, etc are worried about paying for their future, their healthcare, and their children’s educations.
They are the backbone of this country that allowed me to succeed.
I am willing to pay more taxes so that everyone can look forward to a secure future like I do.

First the canon of St. Paul’s resigns over plans to evict the protestors, now this. Way to go, London’s christians.

Fuck yes, cool Christians.

Contrary to what the Tea Party, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the Republican Nightmare Army would have us believe, this is what Christianity is supposed to look like.

This is truly atrocious. Scott Olsen, 23, served in Iraq twice with the Marines and is currently under sedation with a skull fracture and brain swelling after the Oakland police threw a tear gas canister at him. They threw a second as fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid.

Out of curiosity, were there any other injuries to protestors? I feel like the only reason people are outraged by this is because he’s a Marine, which I find troubling on a few levels.

Well I think we know why! The military has always occupied an extremely high place in the mythology of the United States. From George Washington onward military service has exemplified in the public mind the highest duty one can perform for the nation.

What’s interesting is how this particular moment of police repression highlights the inability of mythology of the military as protector of the nation to comfortably exist alongside the policing of citizens at home. When those who served are brutilized by police forces while protesting, the disjuncture is made material. Naturally there are many others who were injured by the police, but the injury of ex-military protesters is a highly symbolic act, and serves as a very powerful rhetorical tool for the movement itself.

By the way! This great doc, Sir! No Sir! which is about military protest and insurrection during the Vietnam war, is great. And everybody should watch it.

Perfectly stated. I also think the attack on a two-time Iraq War veteran demonstrates Conservative hypocrisy pretty nicely. As stated above, military service is the highest duty one can serve for the nation, in the nationalist mindset and if you are critical of this (or any other) war, you hate soldiers. But when those same soldiers come home and are themselves critical of domestic policies, they are made out to be lazy parasites by the same pundits who claimed to champion them before. Sadly, Scott Olsen’s injuries represent the conservative media’s usery of military personnel to further their agenda. It won’t be long before the wags are calling him a traitor.

Mr. Olsen is a member of Veterans for Peace, and is critically wounded after a police assault.

Remember that this is what they do. Don’t blow your wad making peace sign placards and playing the tabla. We have to be organized and informed and articulate to move forward. The conservatives don’t lack perseverance.
